Hakkâri is a province in the south east corner of Turkey, located at the juncture of South Kurdistan and Iran. The capital is Hakkâri. The province covers an area of 7,121 km² and has a population of 272,566 (2006 est). The province had a population of 236,581 in 2000.
The province was created in 1936 out of part of Van Province. Its adjacent provinces are Şırnak to the west and Van to the north.
Hakkâri province is divided into 4 districts (capital district in bold):
The area has been ruled by Akkadians, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylon, Persians, Greeks, Parthians, Rome, Byzantium, the Sassanids, Arabs and Mongols in its long history.
For many thousands of years, up until the Armenian raids of World War One, it had a large population of Assyrians, who spoke Aramaic and followed the ancient Assyrian Church of the East.
The region was the scene of bitter fighting between Assyrian tribesmen and the Ottoman Empire and Kurds loyal to it.
The Assyrians rose up after being promised independence by Russia in WW1. After initial successes, they were left stranded and outgunned after the withdrawal of Russia, and joined to the long list of people who suffered the consequences of serving the imperialists as pawns.
Most Assyrians escaped to join their kinsmen in Northern Iraq, which was also an Ottoman province at the time.
